CHAPTER 14

ADJUSTING TO CHANGE

I ached all over from the blow I had received, and poor Piper had a slight limp, but I wasn’t complaining. We were lucky to have gotten away with just a few bumps and bruises. While I mulled over my ghost problem, I found myself distracted by another issue. Ross hadn’t shown yesterday. I had looked forward to his visit despite the general’s warning. Caroline’s remark about Mark never writing to her came to mind.

Frustrated by my inability to detach my thoughts from the young captain, I dug through the armoire and pulled out my burgundy dress—a fancy piece of clothing I hadn’t worn since before the war started. Laying it flat on the bed, I pressed it with the ancient-looking iron filled with coal Mrs. Goswick had graciously prepared for me.

I pulled the dress over my head and fastened the zipper at the back. Not surprisingly, it was looser than ever. After sponging some complexion powder on my face and a bit of rouge on my cheeks, I escaped the mirror, and in an effort to not overstress about tonight, I headed for the library. There was harmony there. No books had fallen off the shelves since I had put the riddle together.

Ruminating on the unsolved message, I retrieved a book out of habit. While anxiously pacing about, I repeatedly rehearsed the riddle aloud.

While the rest change attire four times a year

Theirs remains green

Keeping my deeds safely hidden

Caressed by the first touch of night and day
